"The Day" – Lamont Thergood, a current inmate in the Connecticut prison system

Imprisonment becomes an indelible part an inmate's life. Here, Thergood captures the paradox of the desire to be free (the lush beauty of the outside world), and the inescapability of prison's influence (the prison bars' similarity to the tree branches, both functioning as 'roots' of sorts).
